The first big performance

I attend a wonderful all-women's bible study at my church during the week. They have a really organized, great program for the "little lambs" -the kids- while the moms can take a 2hr break in the crazy life of raising kids and learn more about Jesus and refresh our soul! Back in November, prior to dismissing for the remainder of the year  for the Holidays, the Children's workers put together a little program for all of the women who attend the Bible Study. I didn't think the twins were old enough to participate, but I found out that they had been practicing and would be in the program. I was stoked! It would be their first "organized" program peformance. They are some of the youngest in their class which made them two of the far, far youngest of all the children on stage. And....let's just go ahead and say it - they are short - so that  landed them a spot right smack dab in the front of the stage. Perfect for mommy's camera, right? Oh man, little did I know what I would capture.

From here on out, there really are no words so, enjoy.

Caden's mouth contortions quickly became the least of my attention...

Oh man, now Caden is going for whole face contortions. Meanwhile, I"m starting to sweat thinking about what Jenna's next move might be.

Fish Face and all I could think about was how thankful I was I put tights on Jenna that morning.

Pulled an eyelid and Jenna is ramping up her Jane Fonda.

You know, just for additional context of the situation...
They never uttered a syllable! Never clapped a beat - nothing. It was the most amazing thing I have seen. I LOVED it. I was laughing so hard I could have cried, but I had to hold a steady hand to snap pictures of  course! It was shocking to see them at -20% participation level because all they do at home is sing and dance! In fact, later that evening, I was showing Ryan the video and they proceed to sing every word and do every motion. Really???? To me, it just adds to the awesomeness of whatever happened in their little minds to decide to not only refuse participation, but just make themselves at home and wait for it to be over! Little rascals...I love 'em! :)

Pre-Christmas Highlights

We had a wonderful Christmas this year. It was so wonderful and exciting to see Christmas through the twins' eyes this year. Everything was magical and new and exciting. Everything! It was also wonderful being settled in our home this year and starting traditions we hope to continue in this house for years and years down the road. One of those traditions was going to see the two houses with crazy lights that everyone seems to drive by during the month of December. We even brought the twins one Christmas prior to moving to Ohio - we never imagined we would be back in 2 years and live right down the street from them! The kids (Easton included) LOVE it. We had several warm days in December so we would pack up the kids and go walk over to the houses. We got to meet each of the home owners and hear some of the history behind what makes them go to such lengths year after year. Ryan had to travel out of town twice in December and I am not ashamed to say I packed up those kids and drove by the houses too many times to count just to help the evening pass by quicker.

We also took Aunt Rha-Rha by one time because I'm pretty sure she is part American/part Elf.

This is "mommy's tree." No kid can touch it. And the date stamp on this picture is November 18th. Earliest I have EVER put up a tree, almost again my own conscience but the twins were SO excited to see tree's and lights up at stores and other houses, I *really* did it for them. ;)

The layout of our house gave us the opportunity to put up two trees that we recycled from my parents attic :) This is the kids "tacky" tree- it basically has all of my ornaments from growing up and all of the new ones we are accumulating. My mom, Aunt and I all give the kids an ornament each year. Multiply that times 3 kids and we already have a tree full!

Hark the herald angels sing! This will always be a favorite of mine during Christmas.

We broke out the gingerbread kit and went to town one night after Easton was in bed. Not much to look at and oh the mess! But a fun tradition to start nonetheless.

We started another tradition a few years ago with some of our dearest friends. The brunch turned into a dinner this year but we still were able to spend some time together with ALL of the kids before we all began traveling for the Holidays. So special.

All of these cuties are within a year of each other

Easton eating with the men folks because lets face it...he eats as much as a grown man.

Christmas miracle - all of the children seated and looking in the same general direction!

My friend from college hosted a Birthday party for Jesus one night. Ryan was traveling for work so it was a way to make the afternoon/evening pass faster, reinforce the true meaning of Christmas to the kids and mommy got to talk to adults for a few hours....sooooo we packed up and hauled down to the party - yes!

We tried our hand at making our own hand print ornaments one morning during Easton's nap. Only problem is that I never did Easton's hand - his ornament is still in the cabinet. oops

Our church asked us to do the advent reading and light the candle one morning. That meant they wanted me and Ryan on stage to read a passage of scripture and light a candle with 3 kids three and under. I was sweating a bit - especially after the twins' performance at their fall concert. We got there early, practiced and promised everything except the sun to the twins if they stood still for 3 minutes! I'm happy to say they did great, Easton was his calm self, the candle lit and Ryan didn't drop his Bible. Success!

My awesome chalkboard my sister did for me. It still looks like this - I can't bear to erase it.

Yes, the entire Christmas Eve at Mema and Pape's, this is the only picture I got.

My Big Boy Caden!

oh man. If you don't like reading another mom's super sappy goo over how proud she is of her child...then skip this post. My big boy is potty trained. Day and Night. I take no credit whatsoever, in fact, I continually look at him and wonder "how did this happen?"

Please rewind and remember this little incident:

Caden has always done things in his timing. If you try to do things he does not like or is not ready for, then frustration and many tears appear. Sometimes, even though he SHOULD be ready, he is not and thus amplified frustration for mommy. Exhibit A would  be the sippy cup. The boy was 14 months old and STILL not drinking from a sippy cup. It is truly unfortunate for him that his mama is fiercely stubborn and does not like to admit defeat. (Yes, even three years into motherhood, I am still learning!) Anyway, I tried for SEVEN weeks - 4 straight, then a couple week break so both of us would live to see another day, then another 3 straight - to train him in using a sippy cup. You name a method, I tried it. Even the cold turkey method! And wouldn't you know that I have an equally stubborn son who went 4 days without drinking (during the day) just because of his refusal for the sippy. I had to give him like a 10-12 ounce bottle at night just to keep him hydrated, but during the day he would scream and kick and profusely sweat when I tried to lay him down or sit him up to drink out of the sippy. Ever since then, potty training has haunted me. Oh man, the stakes are higher when pee and poo are involved - not just milk and water in a cup.

I originally planned to train Caden and Jenna together in September. One horrible, pee and poo filled weekend but it would be done. As I was reading and getting my action plan together, it was evident Caden wasn't ready. So Jenna was trained first, relatively easy and that was that. Back to two in diapers! My first planned training date was after we had been traveling alot in October. Honestly, when we got back, on that Monday morning I just didn't want to! So I didn't. :) I was going to attempt Caden in November - I mean, the boy was 3 by that point and he had been watching his sister go and get praise/ treats for weeks! -but Jenna had to have surgery, so nope! Then December was here with constant daily activities, Ryan had to go to France for a week, Christmas traveling, so again, nope! That brings us to January where I just decided it was time. I had NO idea if he was ready - even the morning we started, when I asked him if he wanted to pee pee in the big potty like Jenna he confidently said "no!."

Morning 1: It started like this. Now that is a good man. I needed all the coffee I could stand!

We sent Jenna off with Gigi and Papa T for her big one-on-one weekend and so it began. I followed the same principles I did with Jenna from the book Pottywise. Caden loves to be moving all the time so the only difference with him was that I parked him in front of Thomas the Train video's all morning just sitting on the potty instead of playing elsewhere and setting a timer to go try every few minutes.

It was very slow and easy - he just sat there - for hours! Literally, the boy sat there for 2 hours...happy as a lark. We had two successes off the bat! I was astonished! Easy Peasy! haha oh how I would eat those words. He wasn't a fan of the "straw juice" like Jenna so I had a hard time getting enough liquids in him to make him need to go often. Anyway, as the morning went on, the kid sat on the potty forever and ever and ever. Finally, it was time to go take a nap so he stood up and not 2 minutes later - not even to his room yet! - he has an accident alllllll over the floor. Like all mornings' worth of pee. It was the first accident so that's ok. Then after nap, we sit another 45 minute straight on the potty - nothing. I felt like I read every book we own. Then - from the bathroom to the kitchen (maybe 5 steps?) -he pees all over the floor. WHAT? Same story that evening. All of Day 1 - he went absurdly long times with no pee while he was sitting on the potty but as soon as he stood up - niagara falls. I was loosing.my.mind. Clearly he was not ready or didn't come close to understanding the point?

Mornings 2: More of the same. Nothing in the potty - everything all over the floor within minutes of getting off the potty. The only thing that kept me going was the commitment to follow through all weekend. But come Monday - I was done if this was how it was going to be. But then, after nap on Day 2-something miraculous happened! He went in the potty!?!? eureka! He still wouldn't drink alot so after that he didn't need to go for a while. But before we went to bed, I told him to go sit on the potty and pee-pee and he did! I audibly praised Jesus - Mommy, more than Caden, needed that little victory that night. That night we put him in "special night time underwear" and to my disbelief- woke up dry the next morning. He went to the potty at home before going to Church and I ended up helping out in his class that morning which allowed me to keep asking him if he needed to go. To my surprise again, he came up to ME and said he needed to go - and did! On the big potty, with kids running all around, in a new place! His second hour teacher told me he did the same thing with her!

The rest is history. He tells me every time he needs to go and has not had one accident while playing or due to him refusing to go sit on the potty. He had one accident during nap when he was sick and coughing a lot (hey, it happens to all of us, buddy), and one other accident that was totally mommy's fault for not taking you to the bathroom when you said you needed to go. #mommyfail

I feel like we have potty's all over our house now. I'm sorry if you come over to our house and all of the paraphernalia you will have to work through just to use the restroom. :)

He wakes up dry as a bone, he is thrilled to go sit on the "cars" potty and has just made my heart burst with pride. He was definitely ready and I grossly underestimated his big boy-ness! :) Here are the major two bumps in our road thus far:

1- Caden calling his new apparel "panties." But give him a break, it is all he has heard from his sister all this time. (But it is hilarious to hear him talk about his  new Thomas and Lightning Queen "panties" and how Ryan about has a stroke each time he hears it!)

2- Constipation from gummy treats around day 3. oh my- it is rough. We had to work through the same thing with Jenna. Once we get through that, the treats become more and more spread out and we don't struggle with it again. But the first two days of sugary drinks and treats does a number on my little ones' tummies.

So I have nothing to complain about. For the FIRST TIME EVER, we have only ONE kid in diapers. Hello! Mama just got a raise. I will say it is quite tricky now in a public bathroom, undressing one toddler, hoisting them on the toilet while barely hanging on to an almost-upside-down baby and keeping the other undressing toddler from peeking underneath the next stall. But....it is life now so we roll with it!:)

I'm proud of you Caden! Love you! You deserved every bite of your doughnut breakfast reward outing!

What we did all Fall

Super condensed version of our insanely busy, but oh so fun fall!

We did pumpkin carving the 3 year old way this year....with stickers. We will be riding this train as long as we can.

Jenna with full tongue extention concentration

Boom. In and out in 10 minutes. No goop, no clean up :)

Nana and Papa took us to Hillridge Farms as part of the twins' birthday. Gigi kept Easton at home so we could play hard and long and not have to worry about E's naptime or constant need for food :)

Just watch this progression with me....Jenna learning she can throw the hay.

Jenna learning she can throw the hay  and get it all over Caden.

Jenna learning she can get more hay on him while he's down.

action shot

another action shot and no, I still had not stepped in to intervene :)

Trying to keep our shoulders in joint going down the super slick slide with Papa.

Caden getting mad air in the hay maze

Then we celebrated the big number 3 for the twins! I already posted about their birthday, but here is their morning-of surprise. Streamers! They called them  "colors" for about a week and asked where the "colors" went when I took them down one night. It's the little things ya know...

We took the kids to the fair the one night we had available. It was very cold, but we took them because- hello, you have to! I have been to the fair every year I can remember (I even walked around and ate my heart out while 36 weeks pregnant with the twins!)....and it was me and Ryan's first date :) My Aunt works for the fair accounting department so she ran out to stand with Easton while we took the twins on a few rides. The Caterpillar roller coaster is super sketch. We will skip over that one next year! I had to suppress my inner mama bear when the ride worker of the giant swing wouldn't let Caden ride since he was not tall enough. Yet he let Jenna ride since her hat made her .5 inch taller. I mean really? They sit ON the parent's lap...not like we were sending them in to a ride where the safety straps wouldn't reach. Not cool when brother has to watch twin sister go down the slide and he can't. It's a lesson we will have to learn and utilize alot with our height projections...wear pointy, tall hats. :)

Not sure about this roller coaster, mom....

Stoic Caden really not sure about what is going to happen here

Train track was a little less thrilling

Our neighborhood had a little block party Halloween festival. It was another opportunity to wear our Superhero outfits, meet new neighbors and it was a nice day so off we went!

Caden nailing the basketball game

Jenna  not too far behind Caden! Not to be outdone of course!

Super Hero Dad - two at a time!

Then our church had a fall festival with fun activities galore! Caden got his super slide redemption with Daddy here. Yes.

Despite their expressions, they are great friends. (Adelaide is also Cadens future wife. Everyone, Adelaide....Adelaide, meet everyone...):)

I'm not sure what was happening here..

One of my favorite pics!

What they did when I told them to make a Super Hero face.

I got talked into going to the fair again with some girlfriends to go see the Who's Bad concert. Let's just say the bottom picture is not even the closest we got to the stage :)

On the 31st, we took the twins up and down the street. They mastered the "trick or treat" part...not so much the "only grab one piece" part. :)

PapaT and Gigi checking out the loot!
